Gardens

Content

Placed in between Tamboerskloof and Oranjezicht and only a couple of kilometres from the CBD. Gardens is one of the oldest suburbs in Cape Town with homes and guest houses that have beautiful large rooms, high ceilings and wooden floors.

Gardens lies just outside of the buzz of the city which makes it an ideal location if you need a more quiet space to work. The residents are quite young, middle class income people, with most being between the ages of 20 and 40 years of age. Something to keep in mind in terms of the occasional house party or two in the area.

There is a list of places to go and sites to see nearby and in surrounding areas, such as The Company’s Garden which is the oldest garden in South Africa. It is also known as Jan van Riebeeck’s vegetable garden, which he grew to feed the colony back in 1652! There are a number of other important buildings within the garden – the South African Museum, the Planetarium and the South African Art Gallery too! Definitely an experience for the whole family! Table Mountain is a stone’s throw away and boasts 5 official hiking routes (Platteklip Gorge, Skeleton Gorge, India Venster, Kasteelspoort) and many more to explore! As well as her Aerial Cableway with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, Camps Bay, and Lion’s Head to name but a few!

Safety

Gardens is generally a safe area depending where you stay as it is quite a large suburb. The closer to town/CBD extra caution should be taken, especially in terms of muggings and vehicle safety. As a rule, do not leave any belongings in your vehicle when unattended and make sure to always lock your vehicle. Do not carry phones or cameras in plain sight and do not carry large sums of cash with you. But don’t let this scare you away from exploring as you will see many tourists roaming the streets here and in neighbouring areas.

Schools

With Tamboerskloof right next-door, it is similar in the sense that the popular choice of schools are Sugar & Spice Educare, and the German international school. There are also a number of other schools and daycares nearby, as well as play parks for children.
